Alun Jones appointed as interim Chief Executive at Healthcare Inspectorate Wales

Following the departure of former Chief Executive, Dr Kate Chamberlain, last month Alun Jones was appointed interim Chief Executive of Healthcare Inspectorate Wales (HIW) for a period of 6 months with immediate effect.

Alun steps up from his role as Deputy Chief Executive and will lead the organisation in delivering its priorities and ensuring that, during a difficult time for Healthcare organisations across Wales, HIW engages in the right work at the right time in the right place to encourage improvement in healthcare, ensuring work is communicated well and makes a difference.

Alun joined Healthcare Inspectorate Wales in April 2014 and has been responsible for oversight of the delivery of its inspections, reviews, investigations and regulatory activities.

Alun is from Wales and has over 20 years’ experience working in audit, inspection and regulation. He has worked for the Audit Commission, the Healthcare Commission and the Care Quality Commission, where he spent two years delivering CQC’s contribution to the Mid Staffs Public Inquiry.

Stuart Fitzgerald will operate as Deputy Chief Executive during the next 6 months whilst retaining his responsibilities as Director of Strategy and Engagement.

On accepting the post as Alun Jones said,

"I am delighted to be appointed as interim Chief Executive of HIW. HIW performs an incredibly important role in the independent inspection and regulation of health services in Wales. I look forward to building on the strong foundations already in place and excellent work of the organisation to continue to help improve the citizen's experience of healthcare in Wales."
