Cwm Taf maternity services statement

In response to the publication by the Welsh Government of the report by the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists into maternity services in the former Cwm Taf University Health Board, Healthcare Inspectorate Wales has made the following statement.

A Healthcare Inspectorate Wales spokesperson said:

“We welcome the publication of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists report, which is in line with our own concerns and the recommendations made following our maternity unit inspection carried out at Royal Glamorgan Hospital in October 2018. Whilst we have accepted the health board’s response to our inspection, we are in ongoing discussions with the health board regarding their actions and progress in maternity services.

“We plan to conduct a governance review of the health board in our 2019-2020 programme of work. The decision was taken earlier this year following a number of issues relating to governance identified during our ongoing inspection activity. We are in discussion with the Wales Audit Office about how we co-ordinate our work on this review.

“As outlined in our operational plan, published earlier this month, we will also commence a national review of maternity services this summer. The review will involve unannounced inspections of maternity services within each of the health boards across Wales. A report will be produced following each inspection and, in line with our usual processes, any urgent concerns will be raised immediately with the health boards and the Welsh Government. The review will conclude with the publication of a national maternity services report in summer 2020.”
