We inspect all types of dental practices, including those which undertake private work, to check people are receiving good care.

How we inspect

We look at how dentists:

Meet the Quality Standards 2023
Comply with the Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations (IR(ME)R) 2000 (and its subsequent amendments 2006 and 2011) (where applicable)
Meet any other relevant professional standards and guidance such as the General Dental Council Standards for the Dental Team

Our inspections of dentists are usually announced. Services usually receive up to twelve weeks notice of an inspection.

Our inspections are carried out by a HIW inspector and an external reviewer who is a dentist with recent hands on experience of dentistry.
